Book Bunch - Book Change

(Click image to go to amazon.com website)

We have decided to change the book for our Book Bunch to The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It is really easy and fun read. This book comes recommended by Stephenie Meyer (of the Twilight series). Here is a summary of the book:

Could YOU survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone fighting against you?

Twenty- four are forced to enter. Only the winner survives.

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. Each year, the districts are forced by the Capitol to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the Hunger Games, a brutal and terrifying fight to the death – televised for all of Panem to see.

Survival is second nature for sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who struggles to feed her mother and younger sister by secretly hunting and gathering beyond the fences of District 12. When Katniss steps in to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, she knows it may be her death sentence. If she is to survive, she must weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Our first Book Bunch will still meet on Thursday, January 22nd at 7 pm. Location will be announced. Let us know if you have any questions. Hope to see you there.

The Fourth Quarter Stake Service project, bringing clothing and other essentials to more than 1,000 people living in need in the deserts near Rocky Point, Mexico, is in full swing. Collection boxes were placed in the halls last Sunday. Thank you to the YW and YM for their help in decorating the boxes, they look great. (Please note that the other wards have their boxes out as well.) Over the next four Sundays, through Dec. 21, we are collecting blankets, warm clothing (clean and in good condition all sizes), jackets (all sizes) and humanitarian aid kids. These include tooth brushes, wash cloths, small combs, soap bars and toothpaste. Additionally, cash donations and gas cards are being accepted to support this effort. Please give cash or gift card donations to a member of the EQ Presidency or Bishopric. You can also bring items to the Ward Christmas Party on Saturday.

Finally, we will need assistance delivering the collected items to the Cave Creek Building on Monday, Dec. 22. More details will be forthcoming on that.

Introducing the Book Bunch!

Every other month (starting in January) we are going to meeting for our Book Bunch. The book we have chosen for January is The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski. It is described as "modern take on Hamlet set in rural Wisconsin".

Here is the book description from Amazon.com:

Born mute, speaking only in sign, Edgar Sawtelle leads an idyllic life with his parents on their farm in remote northern Wisconsin. For generations, the Sawtelles have raised and trained a fictional breed of dog whose thoughtful companionship is epitomized by Almondine, Edgar's lifelong friend and ally. But with the unexpected return of Claude, Edgar's paternal uncle, turmoil consumes the Sawtelles' once peaceful home. When Edgar's father dies suddenly, Claude insinuates himself into the life of the farm--and into Edgar's mother's affections.

Grief-stricken and bewildered, Edgar tries to prove Claude played a role in his father's death, but his plan backfires--spectacularly. Forced to flee into the vast wilderness lying beyond the farm, Edgar comes of age in the wild, fighting for his survival and that of the three yearling dogs who follow him. But his need to face his father's murderer and his devotion to the Sawtelle dogs turn Edgar ever homeward.

David Wroblewski is a master storyteller, and his breathtaking scenes--the elemental north woods, the sweep of seasons, an iconic American barn, a fateful vision rendered in the falling rain--create a riveting family saga, a brilliant exploration of the limits of language, and a compulsively readable modern classic.

More information on the book can be viewed at Amazon.com or at the author's website here.

Our first Book Bunch meeting will be Thursday, January 22nd at 7 p.m. at Alex Albert's House. We know it seems very far away but we wanted to give everyone plenty of time to read the book before then, especially with all the holidays coming up. So mark your calendars and start reading!!

If you have a picture of your recipe please send that as well. We will be getting at least one recipe from everyone so start thinking.

General Conference Times

Ladies, there seems to be some confusion regarding the broadcast times for October General Conference, that appear to be resulting from the extension of Daylight Savings Time, which now begins in March and ends in November, so to help eliminate any confusion (at least that is my goal) here's what to plan on:

The times currently shown on the Stake Calendar, "10:00 AM MT", are Mountain Daylight Time, which is one hour ahead of Arizona time (Mountain Standard Time). The 5:00pm time for the priesthood meeting is Arizona time, which is when the broadcast will be aired at both the Stake Center and Cave Creek buildings.

The Saturday and Sunday afternoon sessions will be at 2:00pm Utah time and 1:00pm Arizona time.

To recap:
. .Arizona Time Utah Time
Morning sessions 9:00am 10:00 am
Afternoon Sessions 1:00pm 2:00 pm
Priesthood Session 5:00pm 6:00 pm
Thanks!

Welcome

"Relief Society stands for love. What a remarkable thing it is to witness the love of good women one for another. They mingle together in the bonds of love with friendship and respect for each other. This organization is actually the only resource that many women have for friendly association.
It is the natural instinct of women to reach out in
love to those in distress and need."
--President Gordon B. Hinckley

This blog is for us to let everyone know about all the different groups, activities, events, announcements, etc. for the sisters in our ward so that we can "mingle together in the bonds of love with friendship and respect for each other.

As we start to set up the Focus Groups on here, we hope that you can find time to participate in any or all of the activities. If there is a group or activity that you are interested in and we don't have it set up, please let us know. We are always so excited to hear your ideas and suggestions.
