City of Mesa Emergency Prepardness Event

National Emergency Preparedness 2009 in Mesa

Are you ready? Are you prepared for a disaster? The City of Mesa and Emergency Management is sponsoring a citywide community event, National Emergency Preparedness 2009 on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mesa Riverview’s Bass Pro Shops, 1133 N. Dobson (Loop 202 and Dobson).

The theme for this fourth annual event is “Family and Disaster Planning,” and will feature valley wide emergency/disaster and equipment, disaster education seminars, displays and entertainment and focusing on the theme.

National Emergency Preparedness 2009 is part of National Preparedness Month, created by a Presidential mandate following 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina to help citizens become better prepared for disasters “We know during large scale disasters, there may not be enough government resources to assist everyone, even those in serious need,” Mesa Emergency Management Deputy Chief Shanon Cluff said. “This event allows us to share information, which may help prepare your family on what to do if disaster strikes.”

More than 20 agencies, including Mesa Fire, Mesa Police and Mesa Energy Resources, are participating in National Emergency Preparedness 2009 with displays outside and inside Bass Pro Shops. The displays will include a variety of emergency disaster vehicles and apparatus, including helicopters, an emergency command van, fire trucks, mass decontamination equipment semi-trailer, HAZMAT unit, bomb squad and SWAT Team truck.

The event also features free community preparedness seminars, such as Family Preparedness, CPR and First Aid, Flu Pandemic Planning, Making Sure Your Pets are Ready for a Disaster and Utilities and Safety. In addition, Southwest Ambulance will have its “Salute to the Troops” ambulance that is wrapped in camouflage and includes silhouettes of military aircraft, the American flag and a bald eagle.

There will be plenty of children’s activities, family entertainment and free prizes. For more information, contact Mesa Fire at 480) 644-2101, extension> 5163 , or visit http://www.mesaaz. gov.

Stake Temple Day Details

Stake Relief Society Temple Day
Tuesday, September 22, 2009

10:00 AM Chapel Session, 10:30 AM Endowment Session

7:00 PM Chapel Session, 7:30 PM Endowment Session

10:30 AM Baptisms for the Dead

7:30 PM Baptisms for the Dead

*All sisters with current temple recommends are invited and encouraged to come with or without a family name. If someone has extra family names that they would like women in our stake to do, please have them come 45 minutes ahead of the chapel session. Claudia Simmons (our Stake Family History Specialist) and Kristine Jorgensen will be in the information desk area at 9:15 AM and 6:15 PM to get and distribute names. (The information desk is located just past the recommend desk on the right side of the hallway.) We will try to catch sisters in our stake as they come in and give them a name from a sister in our stake.

*If a sister is coming to do baptisms for the dead, please remind her to bring a change of WHITE underclothing for after the baptisms. (garments/white bra or white underwear/bra if they are not endowed) If a sister has never been to the temple before, please spend some time preparing her for what will happen during the baptismal time. Kristine Jorgensen will be with the sisters during the morning session doing baptisms, and Mary Rempp will be with the sisters during the evening baptismal session. Sisters that want to do baptisms during the day may come anytime from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Sisters coming in the evening must come at 7:30 PM.

*If you would like to meet other sisters in our stake, plan on having lunch following the Endowment session and Baptismal session around 12:30 PM in the temple cafeteria. If you are coming in the evening and would like to, plan on coming to the temple cafeteria for dinner around 6:00 PM. Sisters attending the Endowment session should come dressed in their temple dress, and sisters doing baptisms should be in their Sunday dress. This would be a fun time to connect and chat with other members in our stake.

*Carpooling would be a great way to get more sisters to the temple, and sisters that are not comfortable driving to the temple.

Love,
Kristine Jorgensen, Mary Sanderson and Mary Rempp
