6am Pinnacle Peak Hike

Ladies!

Do you want an awesome way to start the day on Saturday? (October 24th)

We want to invite all of you ladies in the Desert Hills RS to an early morning hike up Pinnacle Peak! Terry Pavleick will be leading our hike for us... she goes all the time and will be a great "guide" and also help us get our hearts pumping! The gates open at 6am and Terry recommends to park "inside" the gate, because there have been thefts on cars parking on the street (don't leave anything of value in your car). We will be meeting on the trail-head at 6:00am and leaving to go up the trail at 6:10am.

*** If you want to drag any of your kids/ teenagers/ husbands/ friends up at this hour... please feel free to bring them along, just know that Terry is going to help us PUSH up the mountain!

Hope to see you there!

Pumpkin Patch Monday

Hey, ladies! Since they are out of school, my boys and I are headed to a pumpkin patch in Mesa on Monday at 10:00. It is called Vertuccio Farms--we went there last year and had a blast!

There is a corn maze, a big sand box area with toys, trikes, pedal go-carts in a maze, a tractor that pulls a barrel train (you had to pay more for this, but it was cheap and super fun), a mini maze, swings, and pumpkins (of course). There is also a snack stand (I think they sell hot dogs, candy, and ice cream) and a neighboring farmer's market with fresh produce.

It is $7/person (4 and under are free), but let me know if you are interested in going, because if we have enough, we can get a $5 group rate. There is also a $1 off coupon on the site (http://www.vertucciofarms.com/Coupon.html).

It is located at 4011 S. Power Rd. Mesa, Az 85212. Yes, it takes like 40 minutes to get there, but we had so much fun last time we decided it was worth the trip.

We'd love to have you join us if you are interested! And please pass this along to anyone that I may have missed.

City of Mesa Emergency Prepardness Event

National Emergency Preparedness 2009 in Mesa

Are you ready? Are you prepared for a disaster? The City of Mesa and Emergency Management is sponsoring a citywide community event, National Emergency Preparedness 2009 on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mesa Riverview’s Bass Pro Shops, 1133 N. Dobson (Loop 202 and Dobson).

The theme for this fourth annual event is “Family and Disaster Planning,” and will feature valley wide emergency/disaster and equipment, disaster education seminars, displays and entertainment and focusing on the theme.

National Emergency Preparedness 2009 is part of National Preparedness Month, created by a Presidential mandate following 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina to help citizens become better prepared for disasters “We know during large scale disasters, there may not be enough government resources to assist everyone, even those in serious need,” Mesa Emergency Management Deputy Chief Shanon Cluff said. “This event allows us to share information, which may help prepare your family on what to do if disaster strikes.”

More than 20 agencies, including Mesa Fire, Mesa Police and Mesa Energy Resources, are participating in National Emergency Preparedness 2009 with displays outside and inside Bass Pro Shops. The displays will include a variety of emergency disaster vehicles and apparatus, including helicopters, an emergency command van, fire trucks, mass decontamination equipment semi-trailer, HAZMAT unit, bomb squad and SWAT Team truck.

The event also features free community preparedness seminars, such as Family Preparedness, CPR and First Aid, Flu Pandemic Planning, Making Sure Your Pets are Ready for a Disaster and Utilities and Safety. In addition, Southwest Ambulance will have its “Salute to the Troops” ambulance that is wrapped in camouflage and includes silhouettes of military aircraft, the American flag and a bald eagle.

There will be plenty of children’s activities, family entertainment and free prizes. For more information, contact Mesa Fire at 480) 644-2101, extension> 5163 , or visit http://www.mesaaz. gov.

Stake Temple Day Details

Stake Relief Society Temple Day
Tuesday, September 22, 2009

10:00 AM Chapel Session, 10:30 AM Endowment Session

7:00 PM Chapel Session, 7:30 PM Endowment Session

10:30 AM Baptisms for the Dead

7:30 PM Baptisms for the Dead

*All sisters with current temple recommends are invited and encouraged to come with or without a family name. If someone has extra family names that they would like women in our stake to do, please have them come 45 minutes ahead of the chapel session. Claudia Simmons (our Stake Family History Specialist) and Kristine Jorgensen will be in the information desk area at 9:15 AM and 6:15 PM to get and distribute names. (The information desk is located just past the recommend desk on the right side of the hallway.) We will try to catch sisters in our stake as they come in and give them a name from a sister in our stake.

*If a sister is coming to do baptisms for the dead, please remind her to bring a change of WHITE underclothing for after the baptisms. (garments/white bra or white underwear/bra if they are not endowed) If a sister has never been to the temple before, please spend some time preparing her for what will happen during the baptismal time. Kristine Jorgensen will be with the sisters during the morning session doing baptisms, and Mary Rempp will be with the sisters during the evening baptismal session. Sisters that want to do baptisms during the day may come anytime from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Sisters coming in the evening must come at 7:30 PM.

*If you would like to meet other sisters in our stake, plan on having lunch following the Endowment session and Baptismal session around 12:30 PM in the temple cafeteria. If you are coming in the evening and would like to, plan on coming to the temple cafeteria for dinner around 6:00 PM. Sisters attending the Endowment session should come dressed in their temple dress, and sisters doing baptisms should be in their Sunday dress. This would be a fun time to connect and chat with other members in our stake.

*Carpooling would be a great way to get more sisters to the temple, and sisters that are not comfortable driving to the temple.

Love,
Kristine Jorgensen, Mary Sanderson and Mary Rempp

A Wonderful Message from Our Presidency

Happy August Sisters! This month I am really looking forward to our Visiting Teaching conference on Sunday, August 23rd. It will be fun to be all together for the third hour of church and enjoy some music and thoughts about Visiting Teaching including refreshments. I hope all of you will make a special effort to be there! The scripture theme for our Visiting Teaching conference is:
2 Timothy 1:7
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear;
but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

I love to think of this scripture and how it applies to us when we Visit Teach. I think of powerful, bold women who are full of love and are on the Lord’s errand when I think of Visiting Teachers.
Think of your Sisters this month and their unique needs. Pray about them, love them, and remember that 90% of good Visiting Teaching is just showing up! The Lord really will take care of the rest! I know you will be guided by the Spirit as you desire to serve and love those that you visit.
If you have an additional minute, read this poem that I love that I think really embodies my thoughts about Visiting Teaching our needs as women. We all need to feel the love of the Lord and also from the women around us.
Love-Denice Rasmussen

The Secret Heart – by Claire Helmers (c)1997 all rights reserved
I wonder, sometimes, if you know how much I need your love.
How much I crave a compliment, how much I want a hug.
I wonder if you share my fear of always falling short
Of thinking I'm the only one with faults and sins and warts.

Do you like me, put on a face that says your life is swell,
But shake and tremble deep inside that fragile outer shell?
Please don't be fooled by my facade, I've worn it now for years
But often, just below my smile, my throat is full of tears.

Are you convinced that others here are worthier than you?
They know the gospel, pay their tithes, and shine in Sunday School
Their kids don't fight, their house is clean, they never raise their voice.
You'd gladly trade your life for theirs, if you just had a choice.

Well, please remember, sisters dear, that life's not all it seems.
The lives that other women live are only in your dreams
They worry, struggle, cry and pray, and never have enough
Of love from women like yourself, of gentle female stuff.

I need your love like you need mine; I need forgiveness too
For falling short of my ideals, and wishing I was you
So if you like me, tell me so, just tell me to my face
I need to hear that, oh so much: I need your warm embrace.

Do you like my dress, my hair, my smile, the lesson I just gave?
Well, tell me every Sunday, please; I'd love it if you rave.
You see, I'm not as smart or strong or good as you may think;
Life gets me down; you'd be surprised how low my moods can sink.

Well, who am I? I'm everyone--I'm every woman here
Who needs a friend, a confidante, a non-judgmental ear,
Who wants to feel important and to know somebody cares,
Who needs to feel she's up to all the burdens that she bears.

So please don't be afraid of me; draw near to me instead,
Pour out your heart and soul to me and get inside my head.
Let's be a whole fraternity of inter linking hearts.
That's how the Savior planned it, if we each just do our part.

Book Bunch - April 9th

Thank you to all the sisters that came to our very first Book Bunch meeting tonight. It was so much fun to talk about the book The Hunger Games.

Our next Book Bunch will meet April 9th at 7 pm at Kristen Uffens home. The book we will be discussing is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.

Here is the description from the book's website www.guernseyliterary.com:

January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she's never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb.

As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. Born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island, the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.

Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society's members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.

Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways.

The book can be purchased here for around $13 or it is also available at the library.

Have fun reading and hope to see you at our next meeting. Anyone and everyone is welcome to attend.
